Pontellier was beginning to realize her position in the universe as a human being, and to recognize her relations as an individual to the world within and about her.

I think this beginning chapter is an exposition of the family used to show what the family style was like in this time. About “The Awakening: Chapters ” Set in New Orleans and on the Louisiana Gulf coast at the end of the 19th century, The Awakening centers on Edna Pontellier and her struggle to reconcile her increasingly unorthodox views on femininity and motherhood with the prevailing social attitudes of the turn-of-the-century American South.
